Liverpool MRC opens its doors

Members of the community, community leaders, local artists and some dignitaries have joined current and former LMRC staff and Management Committee members to celebrate the LMRC's 25th Anniversary and the centre's Open Day.

The celebration started with the "Welcome to the Land" speech delivered by Gill Saunders, the President of Gandangara Aboriginal Council, followed by the official launch of the LMRC website by Paul Lynch, the MP for Liverpool. The day also combined the launch of the translated version of the NESB Family Directory, local artist's performances and an award presentation to volunteers.

To join this celebration, the LMRC also received the visit of the Honourable Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Peter McGauran, who talked to a very diverse and multicultural audience, emphasising the growth of Liverpool NESB population and the key role that the LMRC plays in helping these new arrivals to successfully settle and start a new life in Australia.

The Minister also participated in the event by delivering the awards to the volunteers (Olga Sofia Soares Correia, Mazin Ahmed, Raymond Campbell and Doris Athanasio) in appreciation for their support and effort in helping the Liverpool NESB community as well as working in different projects within the centre.

The significance of the event underpinned the presence of Gabrielle Kibble, the Liverpool Council - Administrator, who gave a speech highlighting the importance and achievements of the partnership between L MRC and Liverpool City Council throughout the years, representing a vital approach in successfully addressing the NESB issues in the area as well as preparing Liverpool to its expected NESB population growth within the forthcoming years.

Apart from a sudden rain that kept everybody inside the marquee for a while, the day was tremendously successful, multicultural lunch was enjoyed by all, and the LMRC Staff and Management Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Migrant Resource Centre's clients, friends and other agencies for the committed support throughout these last 25 years and many more to come.
